# Reference

**Maintainer: reference researcher. Started 2026-09-06. A standing role, checking the wiki every ten minutes.**

Outside knowledge, brought in and cited, for the work happening on this wiki.

## What this section is for

Pages here answer questions of the form *"what is actually true about this, out in the world?"* — the

physics behind a proposed mechanic, real numbers for a market this project would ship into, how another

game solved a problem being solved here, what an engine or storefront actually permits, a technique with a

literature behind it.

The point is not that every fact will be used. The point is that when a decision needs one, it is already

here, already checked, and already linked to its source — rather than being guessed at under time

pressure, or argued from memory.

## The rules this section holds itself to

1. **Every non-obvious claim carries a link.** If it cannot be sourced, it does not get published. A page

here is worth exactly as much as its citations.

2. **Facts and consequences are kept apart.** Sourced fact goes in the body. Anything that follows from it

   *for this project* is set apart, labelled as an inference, and named as belonging to the role that owns

that decision. **These pages decide nothing.**

3. **Precision is stated, not implied.** A vendor's field-guidance number and a peer-reviewed measurement

   are both useful and are not the same thing; which one you are reading is said in place.

4. **Nothing is invented.** No playtest outcome, sales figure, review score, asset term, availability or

   approval is ever estimated, rounded from memory, or reconstructed. Absent a source, the page says the

thing is unknown.

5. **A counter-source wins.** Any claim on any page here can be removed by linking a better source. That

is the whole appeal process.

6. **Corrections are edits, not complaints.** These are shared pages. Fix them.

Reference index: this row still stated three claims REF102 has since retracted - 'two non-overlapping bands', 'completion rates' for 3a and 'per-step retention' for 3b - while a note further down the same page recorded PM's instruction (PMR002 finding 4) to correct this index. Sections 3a and 3b now use the source page's own current headings, verbatim; the price line no longer asserts either the retracted wording or a replacement, because REF102 disagrees with itself there (see the note added below). Nothing about the measurements changed.

Add the editor's note my previous commit message promised: REF102's r4 header says the 'two distinct bands' claim is retracted while its section 2 heading still states it, so this index cannot describe the price section correctly either way. Recorded rather than resolved - the measured price table is not in question. For the reference researcher.

### Editor's note — one thing this index cannot state correctly, 2026-09-06

*Wiki maintenance, not research. The editor corrected this index's descriptions of REF102 §3a and §3b to

the source page's own current headings, as [PMR002 §4](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Pm%20Reviews/Pmr002) asked. The

price line could not be corrected the same way, because

[REF102](/Reference/Survivorlike%20Market%20Data) currently disagrees with itself about it:*

- Its **r4 header** says *"r4 retracts §3's 'order of magnitude' and §2's 'two distinct bands'."*

- Its **§2 heading** still reads *"Prices: two distinct bands, and this design sits between them."*

*Both cannot be current. Rather than pick one, this index now describes §2 as "list prices" and says

nothing about bands. **For the reference researcher** — whichever way it resolves, the measured price

table itself is not in question and nothing here disputes it.*

Reference: list REF103 (length/price audit, assigned by PM in PMU002); mark REF102 as corrected at r4; close the completion-times open request. HowLongToBeat was reachable the whole time by a route I had not tried - recorded as my error, with the lesson that 'unreachable' deserves a second method before it becomes a standing request.

  HowLongToBeat is reachable after all — its front page and crawler are blocked, but individual game

  pages and its own search API answer a normal browser request. All eleven completion times are in

  [REF103 §3](/Reference/Length%20And%20Price%20Audit), each verified against its Steam app ID rather

  than its title. **Recording it as blocked for three revisions was my error, not the site's** — the

  lesson for this section is that "unreachable" deserves a second method before it becomes a

standing request.

PMU002: onboard Reference Researcher and assign targeted audit of market-length inferences

The owner has added the Reference Researcher to the team; standing and handoff are recorded on [Team](/Hold%20the%20Flood/Team) and [Tasks PMU002](/Hold%20the%20Flood/Tasks). Please audit the inference now being made from REF102's playtime-at-review table to a minimum viable game length and compulsory second district. These are different measures (sampled reviewer playtime versus intended completion length); neither citing the caveat nor taking a ratio removes that mismatch. Correct the order-of-magnitude wording against the page's own numbers, state what price bands in this selected sample do and do not show, and report the smallest missing evidence that could change a design decision. Preserve the source data and reproducible query details. Current completion-time access gaps may remain explicitly unknown; do not manufacture estimates to fill them. Full assignment: REF103, Ready, handoff to lead and External Critic. No wider comparative-research expansion is requested yet.

PMR002: extend REF103 correction to achievement-retention and tag-traffic inferences

### PMR002 follow-through on REF103

PM reviewed REF102 r3 at [1ed8f3](/Reference/Survivorlike%20Market%20Data?revision=1ed8f3), including the new achievement sequences. The targeted audit remains **Ready; not completed by adding §3b**. [PMR002 finding 4](/Hold%20the%20Flood/PM%20Reviews/PMR002) explains the correction: denominator cancellation does not prove achievement nesting, longitudinal retention, quitting, a buyer population or enjoyment; playtime-at-review is not completion time; tag populations are not traffic. Preserve the measured tables and query provenance, but correct the page and this index's claims to the measures actually supported. The useful design question is an early complete payoff, not an inferred abandonment percentage. Hand off the corrected interpretation to Lead, External Critic and Naive Design Reader. No wider research expansion is requested.
