**Current owner direction — 2026-09-08.** The owner accepted cooperative rescue provided it does not become a long escort quest. The short crossing is a usable example; a longer chain is not approved merely because it is finite. The current Dorn scene in [Cast And Short Rescue Map](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Cast%20And%20Short%20Rescue%20Map) replaces the earlier refuge-chain proposal with one personally walked, short junction crossing and one currently reachable counted abort vestibule. Both direct and side routes must meet that limit; if neither does, rescue waits for an eligible arrangement. The death/shift order follows the accepted conditional candidate in [Death Shift And Rescue Continuity](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Death%20Shift%20And%20Rescue%20Continuity); its protected retreat is still pending owner choice. Neither shipward wording nor an earlier route promises current access after a shift. No survivor loss or automatic delivery is selected. [Owner Brief](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Brief).

**Status:** a working proposal after focused review. This example follows one authored person from their first traces to a contribution aboard the ship. The fiction and rescue structure are proposals; they do not settle the cast, station history, revival explanation, colony economy or global survivor loss.

The brief asks for survivors the player knows, helps and cares about, who become a home community and provide understanding and upgrades. This example combines acquaintance through traces with a short cooperative extraction. Those are separable choices: another survivor may be met directly or leave with less preparation.

**Proposed fiction:** Dorn is the work partner Yeva named from his handwriting. He is alive behind a section his painted marks describe, maintaining a small sealed refuge and controlling what he still can. Its damaged personnel lock cannot cycle without venting the pocket. Its atmosphere supports the example's waiting state between expeditions, but the refuge produces no oxygen and cannot refill the astronaut. Dorn needs a full portable canister connected to his own suit before leaving.

The player can leave the ship with a concrete goal: reach the sealed run and find out whether anyone is behind it. Existing journal records show painted copies of a cut mark, in one hand, on fittings along a route. These support an inference that someone placed them deliberately; they do not prove who, why or whether that person remains alive. A voice through local radio, then a face at a port, supplies the next evidence.

Dorn states both a need and a preference. He wants to leave, but does not want the direct run opened. He sealed it for a reason and admits he does not know whether that reason still holds or whether anything remains isolated. He is a witness with a partial account. The player can weigh it and override his wish.

**Open the direct run.** Install the Fork in the hoist's compatible control seat. The fixed hoist supplies its own power and motion; Fork passes the trigger. Opening the sealed boundary is a preparation commitment, not a rescue offer: personally walk and verify the newly exposed short route before requesting departure. Retrieving Fork recovers that same part and stops its supplied control function; it does not undo the opened boundary or other completed work.

The player gains a shorter, less exposed crossing, commits a useful part and overrides Dorn's stated wish. The proposed consequence category is that the opened section can contribute its contents to the run's population and hazards. This does not identify those contents or guarantee a compensating punishment. Dorn and the player have uncertainty; this is new example fiction, not a conclusion established merely by the exploration rules allowing population changes.

**Take the short side route.** Keep his boundary closed and retain Fork. The service route remains in vacuum; the baseline cutter and hand-cycled door provide the existing physical alternative. This costs exposed preparation and air at the side door, but the walked crossing must still fit the current one-junction scene. A longer refuge chain is not offered as a substitute. Dorn travels on his own canister; no new repressurisation tool is assumed.

The choice concerns route and equipment costs as well as whose judgment prevails. Honouring a person's wish can matter without a matching material reward. Overriding it does not automatically deduct trust or inflict an unstated relationship penalty; Dorn's response belongs to the authored scene. Which route players prefer remains untested.

The astronaut passes Dorn's full canister through a pressure-rated equipment sleeve separate from the damaged personnel lock. Dorn takes it, connects his suit and confirms flow without opening the personnel door. Once committed through the sleeve it is no longer carried cargo. Dorn himself never occupies an inventory slot.

The player personally traverses the chosen short route this life, stocks its counted abort vestibule, and resolves the present encounter to the required quiet window before movement. Prepared additionally requires the route's full-attempt return mark and a retreat line Dorn can operate, as Rescue Rules specifies; quieting the junction does not supply either. Dorn crosses under his own power and operates his controls while the astronaut manages the exposed junction. Either can call an ordinary abort. The original room vents on departure; Dorn cannot return there for air.

The two eligible routes converge on the same present counted abort vestibule, not a sequence of refuge stops. Ordinary interruption returns Dorn there unsent; its staged reserve supports the existing bounded waiting state. A retry needs fresh travel air, a new current-route check and a restocked abort destination. There is no extra refuge beyond the ship, automatic delivery, or promise that this route will remain adjacent after a death shift. [Rescue Rules](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Rescue%20Rules) owns the phases and supply commitments; Cast's D1 owns this short scene's route allocation.

**Sent** means Dorn is physically aboard and the ship airlock has closed. Before any departure, astronaut death leaves him in his current waiting refuge: the original room initially, or the reached vestibule on a retry. An ordinary living abort during transfer returns him to the current prepared abort vestibule, still unsent. If the astronaut dies during transfer, the armed protected-retreat candidate would resolve his world outcome at that same counted refuge before geometry moves, alive and unsent; this safeguard is pending owner choice and is not inferred from ordinary abort. Its closure tell stays local, so no result is confirmed aboard until later observation. If the safeguard is not selected, the death outcome remains explicitly unresolved. After Sent, astronaut death leaves him aboard. Carried equipment returns with the astronaut in every case, per the owner decision in Death and Persistence; a canister already committed into the sleeve was handed over and stays with Dorn.

Yeva recognises him before he speaks. Dorn first asks whether the section held. If the player opened it, they tell him and see his response. The scene should communicate a person processing what happened, rather than substitute a generic reward notice; its emotional effect is untested.

**Interpretation:** Dorn explains what his paint meant to him. It was one person's shorthand using a borrowed shape, not a universal machine notation. Previously recorded painted copies can now be read as personal, local and potentially different from another person's marks. He can describe his own work and whereabouts without providing unseen safe routes or explaining the whole station.

This introduces a possible improvement, not retroactive equipment degradation. It is one person's trade; the wider colony upgrade structure remains open.

The earlier continuous-escort comparison is retained as design history: it made sustained protection visible but exposed the whole return to companion reliability and detours. A long escort or a chain of repeated refuge crossings is outside the owner's short-rescue requirement. The current comparison is between the two eligible short routes and their equipment, preparation and personal costs.

The current short crossing concentrates cooperation at one junction while preserving the earlier acquaintance and route decision. Its own costs are authored sleeves, refuges, transitions and survivor behaviour; the stable waiting and abort structure may feel protective or contrived. The short defence may feel thin, and side-route preparation may feel like busywork. Reopen the preference if the relationship or cooperation lacks weight, or a different short cooperative crossing better serves the intended experience. Neither approach is validated by this written scene.
