**Status:** Provisional design with owner-confirmed journal pause and shared carrying direction. Spare oxygen competes with equipment and loot for carrying capacity; quantities remain open. The rest of the game—including enemies, oxygen and other world activity—pauses while the journal is open, even during combat. Record format, capture costs, display behavior and the wider rhythm remain proposals, not evidence of gameplay quality.

Oxygen and threats continue whenever the astronaut samples or changes the world: positioning, watching an event, manipulating a mechanism or committing a record. When the journal is open, the rest of the game pauses, including during combat; this is an owner requirement. The proposed display may inspect stored records and the current frozen view already visible to the astronaut, but cannot advance an event, reveal another angle, complete an interaction or create a record.

A proposed record is one player-framed still of visible evidence plus its location: no motion, replay, unseen context, automatic label or deduction. Framing and committing it are in-world actions. Recording buys portability, cross-location comparison and something concrete to show survivors.

The journal remains accessible during immediate danger and is not gated on clearing threats. This requirement applies to the journal, not automatically to every other menu. Pausing a dangerous moment interrupts horde tension; that is an accepted cost of the owner’s preference, not a pending branch.

This preserves a real expedition cost for investigating while avoiding a cost based on the player’s reading speed. It also permits an epiphany in the station: reflection is not forced aboard ship. Paused journal reading follows the owner’s decision. Its intended benefit is unhurried reflection; whether the wider observation and capture rhythm supports curiosity remains unvalidated.

| Player activity | World / oxygen / threats | Information and choice |
16
|---|---|---|
17
| Notice an unfamiliar clue | Continue normally; noticing adds no separate charge | Only what is currently perceptible; choose whether to stop |
18
| Position or watch an ongoing event | Continue | New angles, timing and sequence require real in-world exposure |

19
| Manipulate, frame or commit a record | Continue until the action completes | One visible still and location; framing may omit useful context |

| Read or compare in station | Rest of game paused, including enemies and oxygen, even during combat (owner requirement) | Stored stills and the already-visible frozen view only; no new angle, event progress or action completion |

| Think aboard the ship | No expedition oxygen or threat | Compare records, seek survivor context and prepare a return |

Example: during running time, the player watches two mechanisms reverse flow and captures a post-reversal still at each, including the repeated mark and direction indicator. Paused comparison shows the common mark; it does not replay or discover motion. That suggests a detour, costing oxygen and return margin. Aboard ship, a survivor recognizes a human retrofit, informing the next route or loadout without translating the alien system.

The default’s real cost is tonal and strategic. A player can freeze a dangerous moment to think, interrupting immediate horde tension. Selective, framed records may discourage indiscriminate capture, but that safeguard is itself unproven and should not become arbitrary friction. The system may also encourage “record everything, sort later,” shifting some discoveries away from the station despite allowing field inference.

27
## Material alternatives
28
29
**Threat-managed rooms with a slow global oxygen budget.** In-world study consumes oxygen, but local danger is mainly the horde. Clearing, sealing or cutting power can buy quiet; combat is one route, not the only one. Its strongest case is sustained physical observation where the environment supports control. Its cost is that discovery may depend on controlling a room, producing a repeated “secure, then inspect” rhythm and weaker moment-to-moment return pressure.
30
31
**Finite field-study reserves at authored apparatus.** The player docks a carried canister into a work hood or console, creating a visible finite reserve for physical study without spending the active return supply. This produces a clear preparation tradeoff and supports manipulation that cannot be captured. Its strongest case is an earned, bounded observation window that preserves limited oxygen. Its cost is authored infrastructure: study points can advertise important clues, exclude mysteries elsewhere and turn exploration into “find socket, spend canister.” It is better kept as an exceptional affordance unless core mysteries repeatedly require it.

## Decision record and reopening conditions

Pausing the journal separates reflection on available information from sampling new world information. The proposed record/display boundary keeps positioning, watching, manipulation and capture inside running world time. Together they preserve in-station realization while accepting interrupted tension and possible capture dominance.

37
Revisit the proposed record format or world-action boundary if planned core mysteries repeatedly need prolonged physical manipulation, or if later owner-authorized observation shows indiscriminate capture or abandoned clues. The owner-required journal pause is not reopened by those findings. No such validation exists yet.

Recorded locations must remain findable after return. Stored records persist through death as knowledge, while all equipment and loot still carried return aboard with the astronaut under the owner’s rule. Depletion can therefore bring a discovery and the remaining carried load home; that can be useful and receives no substitute penalty here. Oxygen already consumed remains spent, and a canister committed to a station fixture or survivor is not carried. World changes and survivor state follow their owning rules.
