Two versions of the R-3 encounter, the first short cooperative rescue, both following the opening: the player has seen R-3's painted ward label, a breathable-pressure indicator and a repeated knock through a window they could not reach, and has installed the isolation bridge.

[Rescue Under Pressure](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Rescue%20Under%20Pressure) develops Yeva’s crossing into a concrete horde scene and compares two death outcomes. That separate proposal has not replaced the shared rescue rules or selected Yeva as the first survivor.

## The conditions both versions rest on
8
9
**A bearing is not a route.** The installed bridge lets the ship separate R-3's live pressure pulse from the collar fault. That gives a *local bearing* — R-3 is live, and roughly that way. It never establishes a walkable path, adjacency, or that anything is currently open.
10
11
**The geometry that makes this one crossing.** The rescue is offered only when the player has **personally walked, in the current arrangement and in one life, from the ship airlock to R-3's threshold**, and that walk is short — the airlock corridor, one junction, the ward door. The bearing helps them recognise R-3 when they reach it; only the walk establishes the route.

13
**If that geometry does not exist, the scene waits.** After a shift the walked route is historical. The player may find a short route again, or not. The scene does not stretch into a multi-stage escort to compensate.

**Timing.** Either party may call an ordinary abort; the return to R-3 during a **living** crossing assumes no rearrangement, and a living return causes no shift. For death during transfer, the ordering depends on the safeguard in [Death Shift and Rescue Continuity](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Death%20Shift%20And%20Rescue%20Continuity), pending owner decision: the survivor's already-armed retreat runs inside a limited window before the shift, and she reaches the **named counted abort refuge** on the route — not necessarily back into R-3 — alive and unsent.

**R-3's door.** Intact and able to cycle. This is not the damaged-lock case: the ward holds its air, the equipment sleeve passes a canister without cycling the door, and after an ordinary living abort the ward is still pressurised with the survivor inside. Nothing in either version vents R-3.

**Cast note.** Yeva Kolb is the first survivor. This is consistent with the existing pages: Expedition Proposal already has her rescued on an earlier trip, and Rescue and Home has Dorn found later behind a sealed section that Yeva names. Making her first preserves that order.

**Her desire.** Yeva is a pressure-tech. She has spent months measuring which parts of this ward system still hold, and the record is on the wall in tape and grease pencil. She wants it to leave with her.

29
**The crossing.** Canister through the sleeve, flow confirmed, the astronaut holds the junction against an ordinary crowd, Yeva crosses under her own power and the airlock takes her. One held junction, one crossing, no accompaniment through the station.

**The choice.** The wall cannot be carried by someone in a borrowed suit. The astronaut can photograph it — work done while the game runs, in the open, while the crowd is coming — or refuse and cross now. Nothing is confiscated either way, and the cost is exposure at the worst moment.

33
**Why she leaves even if the player refuses.** Because she has been watching the ward's margin more closely than anyone and knows it is losing. Staying is now the worse of two bad options, and she says so plainly rather than being talked round. She goes, and she is quieter about it.

**What she contributes aboard.** She can say which fittings on a recorded route held or had failed when measured, with the dates of those measurements. This is historical evidence; it says nothing about unseen current conditions. With the wall, she can speak to rooms she never entered; without it, only to what she measured herself, which is less and she says so.

37
**The return scene.** She does not thank anyone. She asks for a working light, sits down with the ship's recorder, and reads out the ward's pressure log from memory — dates, rooms, the day each one stopped holding — because that list is also, in order, the days people stopped coming back.

39
**Death, abort and shift.** Death before departure leaves her in R-3, pressurised, and the station shifted: the walked route is historical and a new one must be found. An **ordinary living abort** returns her through the ward door, which closes behind her, and the station does not shift. Death **during** the crossing is the pending case above: she reaches the named abort refuge, and the astronaut learns nothing of it aboard — the door leaves a tell on that refuge's local control only, so her state stays unconfirmed until the player observes that refuge in person. R-3 keeps its identity and pressure and travels with its own group; the route to it is what became historical.

**Her desire and disagreement.** She has watched the station change shape whenever something goes wrong and concluded that arrivals disturb it. The astronaut is an arrival. She argues it well, and she is not obviously wrong. She will come — but she asks that **the corridor door she came through be locked behind her**, so that this way in is not used again.

49
**What that closes, and what it does not.** One route: the personnel door. **R-3 keeps its other threshold** — the service access behind the equipment sleeve — which stays reachable, and the lock is reversible at the same panel. This matters beyond the scene: permanently sealing an entire ward would put it outside the owner's entire-station goal.

**Who seals it, and when.** Not her. The astronaut throws the lock at the corridor panel **after she is aboard and the airlock has closed** — so a failed or aborted transfer never leaves a promise stranding the attempt.

53
**The cost.** Agreeing costs a known short route now. After the next shift the arrangement changes anyway, so the loss is limited rather than permanent, and the route may be physically useful again later through the other threshold. What is really spent is her trust if the player refuses, and a convenience if they agree.

67
**Version 1.** Its choice happens under pressure and in public, its consequence is carried by a person rather than a rule, and the return scene does the most work: a pressure log read from memory that is also a list of the days people stopped coming back. Choosing Yeva also costs the design nothing in continuity, since she is already the earlier rescue.

**Its cost.** Her contribution aboard is soft and hard to make clear, and if the wall is missed her usefulness shrinks in a way some players will read as punishment for a reasonable decision.

71
**Version 2's strength.** Disagreeing about the player's own presence is stranger and sharper than wanting one's records, and a dated ledger is far easier to make concretely useful. Its cost is that its central choice trades a route rather than a moment, so it lands as a map decision, and it needs the reversible threshold above to stay compatible with the entire-station goal.

## Open questions
76
77
- Which version, 1 or 2, the owner chooses.
78
- The broad ordering of shifts and rescue refuges.
79
- Whether the owner selects the mid-crossing safeguard (the survivor's armed retreat to the named abort refuge); without it, the outcome of death during transfer is unestablished.
80
- Whether players read Yeva's reduced usefulness, when the wall is missed, as punishment for a reasonable decision — the main thing to test.
81
- These rules are untested; numbers are proposals.
