| # Hold The Horde — Three expeditions into the observation ward |
| |||||||
| You come home carrying a useful machine part and a photograph you cannot explain. Your spectacular combat upgrades are gone. The part is still yours, the door you unlocked is still open, and the next expedition has fresh hordes to fight. This time you know something worth going back for. |
| |||||||
| These proposed scenes begin after the opening, once you have expanded the rig enough to experiment with linked parts and someone is living aboard the ship. Yeva provides the survivor's perspective here; the choice of first survivor remains open. The [Owner Brief](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Brief) sets the expedition rules; the ward and its discovery are a direction to develop. |
| |||||||
| ## First trip — something is wrong with the window |
| |||||||
| **You want a pressure component from the hospital's observation ward.** At home you pack the linked electrical parts of Storm Choir and spare air. Its special spends stored charge on an attack; it has no shield to rescue a bad position. That leaves room for the component, but taking another bulky find will force a choice. |
| |||||||
| The concourse is full of former patients. They pour around abandoned beds while faster creatures use a side gallery. Your automatic fire opens a narrow path. Fighting begins growing the build before the concourse is cleared: the first upgrade makes the electrical attack branch across nearby bodies. You start choosing dense lines because those are where your new power works best. A crowd that made you retreat now tempts you forward. |
| |||||||
| A heavier procession enters behind the first mass. Breaking its leading push is a proposed major milestone, earning a transformation while the remaining horde is still arriving. Your branches become a storm crossing the packed ranks. You deliberately draw two streams together, hold the stored electrical attack until their fronts meet, and release it through the packed bottleneck. Without a shield, you have to leave an escape lane while waiting for that moment. The pleasure is reversal: the crowd's density has become your advantage. An attack from the side can still force you out of position. |
| |||||||
| The ward door is now reachable. You shut the side-gallery grille and clear the last bodies near the component rack. The noise falls away. That earns a pocket of quiet in which to work; further arrivals must give a visible or audible warning. You photograph an oddity you noticed during the fight: a point in the ward's star-filled observation window blinked when the room's bedside call lights flashed. |
| |||||||
| With the room quiet, you try the call switch. The same point blinks again. You take a second photograph, free the pressure component and return through the concourse. The grille remains shut for later trips. A tempting extra part stays on its rack because your pack is full. |
| |||||||
| **At home**, the component improves the ship. Yeva studies your photographs and remembers that this ward was buried inside the station: it should not have had an outside window. She does not tell you what it is. You now have a contradiction you can investigate. Bringing home an answer to the repair problem has opened a much more interesting question. |
| |||||||
| ## Second trip — use the hospital as an instrument |
| |||||||
| **You want to test whether the window depicts the station itself.** You take a spare Fork Relay because it can send one input along two compatible paths. It fills the carrying space left beside your movement rig and canister; now you have a reason to try it in hospital machinery. |
| |||||||
| The concourse contains fresh enemies. The grille you shut is still shut: that route supplies no attackers. The encounter uses the open ward doors and the farther gallery instead. Your old work changes the fight rather than cancelling your next rise in power. |
| |||||||
| You try the proposed ember variation of **Gravity Furnace**, described in [Three Ways to Break a Horde](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Build%20Comparison). This outing illustrates that possible replacement for its stored-charge version; the choice remains open. Regular growth adds the rear pull to your movement-driven pulses, so you curve around the beds instead of holding yesterday's bottleneck. A further growth step makes deliberate strides leave brief glowing embers. You are working toward Furnace Burst, the major transformation that lets your manual special turn that recent movement into a heat lance and bloom: you must turn toward the gathered crowd while the embers remain. Holding for a denser tail risks losing the firing window or letting it catch you. Familiar ground is useful because you know where a broad turn ends in an obstruction. |
| |||||||
| At the ward, you clear space and connect the Fork Relay to the call-light circuit and a service lamp on the movable examination rail. One press lights both. One point in the window stays still; another follows the lamp's changing position. You move it again and predict which point will move before pressing. It does. |
| |||||||
| That gives you a hypothesis, not a location for every light. The rail bends around one corner; its moving point traces the same bend on the window. You use that shape and the fixed call light to predict which point should represent the lamp in a nearby supply closet. You walk to the closet, switch its lamp off, and return: precisely the predicted point is now dark. Switching it on and checking again confirms the match. These short tests use the cleared ward and its adjoining service space. |
| |||||||
| You can now orient this part of the display against two known rooms and the rail. Another point lies beyond the supply closet, where the human plan shows a solid partition. Something responsive exists there, although you do not yet know what. The discovery changes the scale of the place: you have been treating an alien instrument as a hospital window, and it is showing something the hospital map leaves out. |
| |||||||
| You next move the rail past its painted maintenance mark. The motor rises in pitch and a neighboring ward door rattles: this larger movement is waking another source. The tide arrives while you are away from your preferred turn. Now the discovery has a combat consequence: you know the rail's movement and can use the open lane it leaves. Breaking the next major push earns the heat-lance climax. You gather the remaining pursuers into the broad ward entrance, keep the glowing stride embers alive and turn to fire before the oldest fades. The payoff is surviving through a piece of the room you have just learned to understand. |
| 36 | ||||||||
| You stop the experiment, clear or separate the remaining attackers, and capture the instrument while the game runs. Then you open the paused journal to study and annotate the record. You have enough air either to investigate the next unknown point or to carry the extra part left last time. You retrieve the Fork and leave your emptied canister on the ward rack to make room for the part. You take both parts home. You have learned where to search next; leaving that question open makes returning a choice, not a failure. |
| |||||||
| ## Third trip — follow a prediction |
| |||||||
| **You want to reach the space that the human map omits.** The ship's repair and the recovered part remain useful. Your temporary combat power starts over, and fresh fighting on the approach supplies another climb. |
| |||||||
| This time the opened ward route lets you approach the concourse from another angle. You can repeat a reliable build or use your new part to experiment. The path to the instrument includes ordinary combat before the major challenge; choosing a shorter route should change that preparation rather than secretly assume you already have a transformation. |
| |||||||
| At the instrument, you repeat the known-light checks. The unexplained point is still beyond the supply closet on the same orientation and scale. You investigate that partition and find an older access mechanism beneath its hospital covering. Its two input paths suggest trying the Fork Relay that divided the ward signal. |
| 46 | ||||||||
| 47 | For this trip you have brought the electrical rig again. Seating its Fork in the access mechanism temporarily removes the branching path from your weapon. You have ordinary shots while the start latch engages. A visible catch holds the completed start, letting you retrieve the Fork and restore the rig before opening the passage fully. That short exposed operation is the equipment tradeoff; the mechanism does not demand keeping a crucial combat part installed through the entire climax. |
| |||||||
| Opening the passage wakes the crowded gallery beyond. Ordinary fighting on the approach has already earned your branching attack. Here, breaking the gallery's leading heavy push earns the trip's major electrical transformation while its deeper ranks are still advancing. You use it to cross the gallery toward the refuge window, or retreat with the discovered access intact. This is the trip's climax: turn what you earned into a route through the mass. An exceptionally strong build can overwhelm it; the game does not add tougher bodies merely to cancel your success. |
| |||||||
| Once the passage is usable, you close a bulkhead behind you and hear something answer from the far side of a refuge window. Two knocks. You answer; two knocks return. The impossible point on the map has become a place with someone in it. Reaching and talking to them is this trip's reward. Their rescue would be a separate, short cooperative action with its own preparation, not an escort added to an already long return. |
| |||||||
| **At home**, you have a reachable new place, a possible person to help and a reason to show Yeva what you found. The three trips have moved from repairing a ship, to reinterpreting the station, to making a human connection. Combat power resets each time; that chain of discoveries does not. |
| |||||||
| ## What makes the return loop worthwhile |
| |||||||
| | Renews each expedition | Carries the journey forward | |
| 58 | |---|---| |
| 59 | | Crowds in combat areas and opportunities for regular combat growth | Recovered parts, learned interactions and completed repairs | |
| 60 | | Temporary upgrade choices and larger transformations | Opened routes, permanent seals and joined rooms | |
| 61 | | Decisions about how to fight and how far to push this time | New questions, survivor relationships and access to previously hidden places | |
| |||||||
| A living return keeps the room arrangement. Death changes the unjoined station, so the next approach can differ more radically; observations attached to a particular room remain useful when that room moves. Either return brings physically carried property home and ends temporary combat upgrades. Spent air and consumed material remain spent. |
| |||||||
| Walking home keeps a known arrangement and lets you choose a stopping point. Dying may still be an attractive return in some situations, and no new penalty is added to prevent it. The design must judge whether that convenience supports exploration or makes the return journey pointless. |
| |||||||
| ## What remains to design |
| |||||||
| - How much ordinary growth and how many choices make a familiar approach exciting without turning it into a compulsory warm-up? New approaches need to offer growth before their climaxes. |
| 70 | - How should renewed populations use a room after permanent closures? A sealed entry cannot be silently reopened, and an enclosed safe room cannot receive bodies without a credible route. |
| 71 | - Which major horde events grant transformations early enough to enjoy them against substantial opposition? |
| 72 | - How much combat can surround an experiment before curiosity feels constantly interrupted? Earned quiet, warnings and the paused journal protect different parts of that attention. |
| 73 | - The window instrument needs a coherent visual and causal design, clues and a place in the actual room plan. The scenes propose its meaning; they do not settle the hospital's deeper story. |
| 74 | - Passenger carriage travel and cargo shipping remain separate, unselected options. These outings use walking routes and do not depend on either. |
| 75 | - These scenes and their pacing are proposals; their fun and practical duration await later testing. |
