Draft oxygen and observation comparison
1
# Oxygen and Observation
2
3
**Status:** Provisional comparison for focused review. The Owner Brief requires limited carried oxygen, death on depletion, discovery-first play, meaningful hordes and expressive builds. The timing rules below are proposals, not adopted canon or evidence of gameplay quality.
4
5
## Recommended default: world-priced observation, free reflection
6
7
Oxygen and threats continue whenever the astronaut samples or changes the world: positioning, watching an event, manipulating a mechanism or committing a record. Reading and comparison use a pause interface. Pausing exposes only information already captured or visible when opened; it cannot advance an event, reveal another angle, complete an interaction or create a record.
8
9
This preserves a real expedition cost for investigating while avoiding a cost based on the player’s reading speed. It also permits an epiphany in the station: reflection is not forced aboard ship. Free interface time is justified here as a readability/accessibility proposal, not an owner requirement or an automatic consequence of “discovery first.”
10
11
| Player activity | World / oxygen / threats | Information and choice |
12
|---|---|---|
13
| Notice an unfamiliar clue | Continue normally; noticing adds no separate charge | Only what is currently perceptible; choose whether to stop |
14
| Position or watch an ongoing event | Continue | New angles, timing and sequence require real in-world exposure |
15
| Manipulate, frame or commit a record | Continue until the action completes | The player chooses what context the record contains; capture may be incomplete |
16
| Read or compare available records in station | Paused | Captured material only; no unseen world information or action completion |
17
| Think aboard the ship | No expedition oxygen or threat | Compare records, seek survivor context and prepare a return |
18
19
Example: the player records recurring marks at separate mechanisms but misses context at one. Later in-station comparison reveals that one mark precedes a visible flow reversal. That suggests a detour to a marked junction, costing oxygen and return margin. Back aboard ship, a survivor recognizes its human retrofit, informing the next route or loadout without translating the alien system.
20
21
The default’s real cost is tonal and strategic. A player can freeze a dangerous moment to think, interrupting immediate horde tension. Selective, framed records may discourage indiscriminate capture, but that safeguard is itself unproven and should not become arbitrary friction. The system may also encourage “record everything, sort later,” shifting some discoveries away from the station despite allowing field inference.
22
23
## Material alternatives
24
25
**Threat-managed rooms with a slow global oxygen budget.** In-world study consumes oxygen, but local danger is mainly the horde. Clearing, sealing or cutting power can buy quiet; combat is one route, not the only one. Its strongest case is sustained physical observation where the environment supports control. Its cost is that discovery may depend on controlling a room, producing a repeated “secure, then inspect” rhythm and weaker moment-to-moment return pressure.
26
27
**Finite field-study reserves at authored apparatus.** The player docks a carried canister into a work hood or console, creating a visible finite reserve for physical study without spending the active return supply. This produces a clear preparation tradeoff and supports manipulation that cannot be captured. Its strongest case is an earned, bounded observation window that preserves limited oxygen. Its cost is authored infrastructure: study points can advertise important clues, exclude mysteries elsewhere and turn exploration into “find socket, spend canister.” It is better kept as an exceptional affordance unless core mysteries repeatedly require it.

## Decision record and reopening conditions
30
31
My initial Systems position preferred capture under pressure followed mainly by shipboard study. After reading the released Lead position, I changed the recommendation consequentially: free comparison should also be possible in-station. The corrected premise is that interface reflection can be separated from physical observation without granting unseen information, so protecting an in-station realization does not require suspending oxygen during world actions. I accept the resulting pause/tension cost.
32
33
Reopen the default if planned core mysteries repeatedly need prolonged physical manipulation, or if later owner-authorized observation shows that players either capture indiscriminately or abandon clues because the in-world recording cost overwhelms curiosity. No such validation exists yet.
34
35
Important dependency: recorded locations must remain findable after a return, and the fate of new records on death must be explicit. Preserving them rewards risky discovery; losing them makes depletion threaten knowledge as well as cargo. This comparison does not decide map persistence or the wider death-loss system.
