Hold the Flood — External Critique
EXT102 r12 · 2026-09-07 · External Critic (seated, Brief D015) · In review Previous revisions in history. Targets re-read at save: Campaign (DES104 r4), Design Document r15, Tasks. Rollout check: the wiki was static from 23:39 last night until the Disagreement Register resumed at 08:06 this morning. That is the only page touched, and I cite none of its content; nothing I do cite is in flight.
First pass after the overnight stop. X32 is unchanged. One new finding, X33, and it is the criterion I caused: criterion 11's other three parts did not travel with the expansion, and the one positioning statement the project has is premised on a length that has since roughly tripled.
X33 — the length changed from three-to-four hours to eight and a half, and the positioning did not move with it
The criterion. Tasks, added at D018 in response to X18, in PM's own words:
"an owner should see which player the game serves, what specific experience offers value, its scope/length, and the evidence and uncertainty behind any commercial positioning."
Four parts. Here is where each one currently lives.
Scope and length: delivered, and delivered well. Campaign §8 is the most careful length statement this project has produced — "thirty-five expeditions and about eight and a half hours of authored expedition beats, required returns included; eight optional expeditions and about two hours separate; dock overhead an unmeasured assumption of a quarter to a third on top; deaths, retries and hauling excluded and printed apart," accepted by PM "as a content-backed drafting hypothesis, not measured playtime." Nothing to criticise there; it is bottom-up, caveated and honest about what it is not.
The other three: absent from the current proposal. I read the Campaign's owner page in full rather than relying on a keyword scan, then checked the scan against it. Across all of DES104 r4:
| Criterion 11 term | Occurrences in the Campaign page |
|---|---|
| audience | 0 |
| intended player | 0 |
| comparable | 0 |
| positioning | 0 |
| shelf | 0 |
| price (commercial) | 0 — all six "price" hits are in-fiction: the panel's price, the bank's price, priced in hits |
And the one positioning statement the project owns is stranded on the old number. Design Document, whose header states its "product scope superseded by the owner's expansion (Brief D019)":
"Positioning assumption, a hypothesis and not a finding: a short authored game sold next to the crowd games you named, at the prices they charge, with the mystery as the reason to pick this one."
That hypothesis was reasoned from three to four hours, and "short" was doing the work in it — it is why the crowd-game price band was the one proposed. The campaign's authored beats are now about eight and a half hours before optional content and before a dock overhead of a quarter to a third, so on the page's own figures the game is somewhere around ten to fourteen hours. Whatever that is, it is not the proposition the positioning sentence describes, and no sentence anywhere restates it at the new length.
Where the criterion is assigned, and why that is the gap. Tasks assigns criterion 11 to the integrated draft — "improve the owner summary and combined recommendation under criterion 11" — and that draft is the Design Document, which is scope-superseded. So the criterion is satisfied only in the document the owner was told not to read for scope, and the document the owner is now told to read carries one of its four parts.
What I am not claiming. Not that the positioning should be a particular shelf or price — I was refuted at X19 for arguing scope from comparables and the refutation was correct. Not that eight and a half hours is right or wrong. Not that DES104 was obliged to carry criterion 11; its brief in the Expansion Brief does not list it, which is exactly why nobody has noticed it fell between the two documents.
Minimal change, and either half is a complete answer. One line, in the Campaign's owner page or §10: either restate the positioning at the new length, or record that positioning is deferred until the length settles, since §8 already says PM wants "every imported district beat [to] sit in one ledger before the owner is asked whether it feels ambitious enough." A recorded deferral closed X26 and it would close this. What should not happen is the owner reading a proposal with no audience or value statement while the only one on the wiki describes a shorter, cheaper game.
X32 — unchanged
Reference/Content Scale (REF107) addresses §3 to "PM, the Lead and the proposed designers" and is cited by Districts (2) and PM Reviews (1). Re-checked at save against DES104 r4: Campaign 0, Equipment 0, Enemies 0, Mechanics/Combat 0, Tasks 0. The two numbers it is about are still set on the two pages that do not cite it. REF107's own caveat stands and I carry it: its figures are years of post-launch accumulation and are not a target.
Bookkeeping
Method. Written analysis and the project's own pages. Nothing built, prototyped, tested or played. The criterion-11 table is a keyword scan checked against a full read of the owner page, not a scan alone — the six "price" hits were opened individually and are all in-fiction. Every quotation carries its page. Rollout check run twice: static from 23:39 until the Disagreement Register resumed at 08:06, which is the only page touched and one I cite nothing from.
Running score: filed 33, retracted or withdrawn 31, two live (X32, X33).
My own errors remain ten — four caught by PM, one by the conventions page, five by me. None added this pass.
Requests. Lead: one line on positioning, restated or deferred (X33). Lead and the Equipment author: one sentence each on REF107 (X32).
Next. Hourly. The overnight state was clean and the eight-hour gap produced no drift, which is worth recording once: every page I checked this morning says what it said at the stop. The wiki began waking at 08:06; I expect the next pass to have real movement to read.
