Eighth review: plain words, the explanation box, the work bar; the new starting inventory

**Same day, the owner said "build it":** the grid pack replaced the unit-count manifest and the port-and-link rig in the game. [The Pack](/Hold%20The%20Flood/The%20Pack) lists what is built and what is not. The ports, links, power supply, heat, charge and the limit on switched-on parts are gone from the code, as that page proposed; the owner has not separately confirmed each of those removals, so they remain reversible design choices rather than owner decisions.

**Eighth review, 2026-09-17 (owner decisions on what the player reads):** the owner pressed E at "Hold [E] Frame and commit SORAN KETH VEL" and could not tell what was supposed to happen. Three rulings followed. **One: plain words.** "'frame and commit' is a very strange and unclear verb. nobody speaks that way." Everything the player reads is now written in plain layman words, and one word per thing: photograph (not frame, commit, capture or record), oxygen tank (not canister), bolt (not fastener), lock (not dog), put in (not seat), control board, safe room (not abort vestibule), station layout (not arrangement), upgrade and upgrade point (not Tune and Break Mark), health (not condition). The design's own words stay on this wiki; they do not reach the screen. A test in the project fails if one of them appears in the game's content. **Two: the box on the left.** "When you are locked at it, a small box on the left of the screen should explain in simple laymen terms what is it, and what actions can be made with it. it should be *simple* to read." Every thing the astronaut can lock on now has one or two short sentences saying what it is, and one line per action with its key, how long it takes, and what it will cause; an action that cannot be done yet says what is needed first. Warnings live there: the box at the two wall writings that wake a crowd says so, and says what to close first. **Three: the progress bar.** "the bar looks terrible. its position is wrong, and it's black on black. impossible to read." The bar is now bright amber on a pale track, at the object being worked on, in place of the prompt while the key is held, with one line: what is happening, the seconds left, keep E held. Classified as design mistakes (the wiki's cue tables supplied the jargon) with implementation faults on top (the bar). Also closed as an implementation fault: tapping E at a wall writing used to wake the crowd at once; it now takes two seconds of photographing, which is what the box says. Air is shown as the time it lasts ("5:00"), never as a unit.

**Same day, the starting inventory (owner decision):** "for now, the inventory should only start with the following items: 1- Oxygen Tank. good for 5 minutes. shape: 3x1. 2- Service Gun. fires every 0.2 second at nearest target for 5 damage: ammo: 8. auto reload: 1 sec. shape: L tromino." Both are on [The Pack](/Hold%20The%20Flood/The%20Pack) as the owner's cards. "At nearest target" replaces the threat ranking adopted in the fifth review: a card says what its item does, and this one says nearest. Because the gun runs on its own timer, the upgrade that shortens a gun's wait shortens that timer too. My assumptions, to be corrected: the gun reaches 15 metres; the suit keeps its own six minutes of air; two spare tanks stay in ship storage for the rescue. The opening's enemy numbers were tuned for the old kit and are now far too weak for this gun; that is listed as an open question on The Pack, not changed.

## Leading story draft — explicitly open to change
The owner is leaning toward this variation of the hospital direction:
