# Hold The Horde — Moving Scan Expedition

*A reversible placement proposal for one later expedition. It uses existing rooms, sources and [Storm Choir equipment](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Hordes%20and%20Builds), but adds a substantial scan-and-bridge fitting. Counts, spacing and pleasure are paper targets, not tested balance, performance or fun.*

## The promise at the door

On a living return, the current walked route is **Dock Mouth → Pump Hall → Cable Junction** (R01→R14→R15). For this pass, R14's gantry hatch, R15's cable-duct grille and at least one R24 loft hatch were never permanently sealed; no closure is reopened. Through new observation glass high in the Cable Junction, points of pale light hang against a dark transfer void. They resemble a constellation, but they shift when the rail lamp twitches in its parked carriage. One point shines on a distant receiver collar; beside the window, a folded bridge waits behind a new glazed pressure door, visibly aimed at nothing.

The player wants to know whether moving the lamp will turn those points into a current route. The carriage has a bright station-supply trace, a mechanical brake at floor level and a marked rail ending at the window. It needs no carried power part. Releasing the brake is live work. Once released, it rolls at walking pace while the player runs ahead, falls behind or circles through the junction's existing cool bays and transparent-rail lane. Bodies occupying the marked rail envelope slow it visibly; clearing that space lets it continue. A red cord stops it at the next notched position, so stopping never requires holding a panel.

The release also sends a hard pulse down the old cable main. Behind the player, R14's gantry hatch shakes and its service-run stage begins across the overhead walk and stair. Its two announced bands approach through the open R14→R15 floor threshold. At the same time, the first cable-duct band presses behind R15's grille and transparent rail. Lamps at both apertures announce the directions before movement begins. Nothing comes from the cable itself, and no source reacts to the player's damage or build strength.

The first decision is movement, not defence-circle duty. Staying near the carriage keeps its track open but lets the two approaches close together. Running to the R14 threshold turns the rear bands into a funnel but leaves the carriage to stall. Crossing the transparent rail gives a safer angle on the duct group, while the structure interrupts Arc paths. The existing Boltspitter line, Veilbearer sheet and Carousel warning still demand attention; the lamp does not disable them.

The two R14 bands pay Break Marks one and two. The first R15 band pays mark three before the carriage reaches its middle notch. The ring becomes `Tune ×1`; in the fully paused journal the Storm Choir player chooses **Echoing Arc**. Closing the journal restores the same moving fight. Ordinary Projector impacts now feed visible extra Arc branches through connected bodies while the Dynamo and Fork continue dividing charge between Arc and Capacitor.

## The breakthrough and crest

At the middle notch, the carriage makes its second bearing sample and R15's rail gate admits the second cable-duct band. This proposal gives the scan one major milestone with two once-per-expedition facts, in either order:

- **Scan held:** the carriage crosses the middle sampling frame while that warned band is committed and the rail is moving rather than body-stalled.
- **Veil answered:** the player reaches a clear side of the Veilbearer's announced sheet, keeps the track clear until the membrane decays, displaces the unfinished cast, or defeats the Veilbearer. An early defeat is remembered; there is no replacement or immunity.

When both facts exist, a compatible major transformation becomes ready immediately. For Storm Choir that is **Thunderhead**. It is not a key: the carriage, brake, walking route and later bridge release remain operable with ordinary fire and the worn cutter. A player who sealed or avoided enough bands may reach the window without Echoing Arc or Thunderhead.

At the far position, the carriage trips a **new visible alarm lead** mounted along the open R15→R24 branch. If the existing transfer-gallery loft stage is still uncommitted and at least one of its three hatches is undogged, that same stage releases once and its hatch movement is visible from the R15 approach. This is an alternate trigger for E07's existing stage, not a new source or a second copy: a stage already prevented, committed or exhausted this expedition does not return when the R23 pair is later operated. The R24 crowd walks through the shown threshold toward R15 while survivors of the cable bands press from the other side.

Around a hundred bodies can now occupy the converging lanes. That is a paper target, not a reactive guarantee: the new R24 release overlaps the still-active second R15 band and whatever physically survived and followed from earlier bands. Efficient clearing makes the crest thinner; nothing compensates with hidden arrivals. A player seeking the Storm payoff steps off the safe rail edge into the connected middle, lets ordinary impacts finish filling the store and presses the Capacitor's manual command. Thunderhead sends three Arc heads through the packed bodies and a pressure lance down the carriage lane, with ideal coverage capped by the current equipment rules. It opens space rather than deleting the encounter. Ordinary fire and charging resume only as the parts become ready, while fast survivors still cross the track.

If the release goes badly, the player can spend Thunderhead on the nearer pack, pull the brake cord and withdraw R15→R14→R01. This Storm Choir has no Barrier and leaves little spare carrying room, so holding the middle trades defence and find capacity for spectacle. Crossing to R24's apron to dog a hatch reduces pressure but gives up position beside the carriage. Death returns everything still carried, spends the trip's oxygen/material and ends all temporary upgrades; it does not erase completed scan samples.

## What the instrument shows

The lamp measures **bearing changes to exposed reflective receiver fittings from three known positions on its own rail**. It does not name a room, measure a safe path, translate a mark or reveal anything outside its line of sight. Each near, middle and far sample commits one visible trace while the world runs. The final display overlays those three observations; their shifted points produce the apparent constellation. Under the [observation rules](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Oxygen%20and%20Observation), a committed still records the display, place and current arrangement. The paused journal can compare that still with older records, but cannot replay the sweep or finish a missing sample.

At the far position, one set of bearings converges on a receiver collar now visible at **R28 Regulator Gallery's existing A-face landing**. The same collar lights a direct lock on the folded bridge's reach scale. That is evidence for trying the local release, not proof from an icon. Operating it happens in live time. The span unfolds across the transfer void and catches the collar; only walking the bridge establishes that it is a current route.

This is **not a [permanent room join](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Connecting%20The%20Station)**. It adds no compatible latch and does not bind R15 to R28 through a death shift. A living return keeps the arrangement, completed scan and extended bridge, while a new expedition renews eligible combat and resets Echoing Arc and Thunderhead. After a death, a changed external relation breaks the receiver lock, closes the bridge door and retracts the span to R15; the dated scan remains useful evidence but its route becomes historical. The R15 fitting and completed local samples persist. A fresh current scan is required before another receiver can be trusted.

Quiet is earned before interpretation. The finite hatches settle after releasing their committed bodies but are not permanently sealed unless their dog wheels were used. The player clears the creatures beside the far carriage or closes the scan bay's new pedestrian bulkhead to separate them. R15's Carousel remains a live hazard until its own state is handled. Only then does the still window belong to awe: the lights were not stars, one of them has become a bridge, and another unresolved point remains in the scan.

Across the new span, R28's fan, Grid seams, rack aisles and Caller source lamp are visible before commitment. With little oxygen left, the player can risk the crossing now or walk home with the record. The next living-return expedition begins without temporary power but with the bridge still open and the physical rig retained. The player can rebuild Storm Choir's climb on the route, or break it apart to make room for current defensive or Nozzle equipment suited to R28. The scan has changed the next action without answering who made the system, why the arrangement changes or what the remaining point means.

## Placement and state at a glance

| Element | Existing support | Proposed addition or rule |
|---|---|---|
| **Route and host** | Arrangement B already walks R01→R14→R15 and gives R15 an arm to R24. | Keep the carriage wholly inside R15. Add a three-position rail parallel to clear floor, powered indicator, brake/stop cord, observation glass, separated scan bay, glazed bridge door and folded bridge. This is one new R15 walking opening, but no new room. |
| **Sources and warnings** | R14 service run: 30–60; R15 cable duct: named but unnumbered; R24 loft: 30–60 through three hatches. All have visible apertures and closures. | Propose 40–80 for R15, split into two bands. Brake pulse wakes R14/R15. A new alarm lead visible through the R15→R24 threshold lets the final sample trigger the same uncommitted R24 stage once. Total available across the three sources is 100–200; target final occupancy is 70–120 through physical overlap, never adaptive refill. |
| **Growth and major** | Three marks bank one Tune; Storm Choir's Echoing Arc and Thunderhead already have current equipment rules. | Two R14 bands plus first R15 band pay the pre-major Tune. `Scan held` plus `Veil answered` readies the major before R24's final release. No upgrade is required to progress. |
| **Bridge and evidence** | R28 has one A-face approach and an encounter readable from its own protected mark. Records are framed live and reviewed paused. | Add one external receiver collar at R28's existing landing and one current R15↔R28 line of sight across a transfer void. The span opens a walkable current bridge only; no new R28 door, room join, unseen map or safety verdict. |
| **Failure, rescue and persistence** | R15→R14 is the encounter withdrawal; R24's recess may be Aster's abort only under the separate short-route rules. | Brake and walking retreat stay usable. Scan pressure never transports or qualifies a survivor; R24 must still be quiet/separated and its short route independently walked. Each completed sample persists; temporary motion rolls back to the last notch. Living return preserves the aligned bridge; death makes it historical and retracts it. |

## Why this placement, and its cost

The strongest alternative is **R35 Receiver Vault Approach**. Its long hall, 80–150-body occupancy, side mouths and far hatch could support the carriage and climax with fewer source changes. Its cost is worse: R35 already carries Shutterback, Siphon, Caller, the Receiver iris/two-clamp work and the sealed-route population allocation. Adding a scan rail and bridge there would make the build spectacle compete with the core approach and could imply that the scan itself grants core access. It also provides less room for an ordinary choice before the crest.

R15 is the provisional choice because its cable bank, transparent rail, cool bays, Veilbearer and visible R24 branch already support motion, occlusion, flanking and withdrawal. The price is explicit: one new major scan/bridge fitting, provisionally a fourteenth placed mechanism unless another is cut; substantial R15 floor/ceiling rework; a new glazed walking opening and scan bay bulkhead; a transfer-void sightline and R28 receiver collar; a numeric R15 source budget; and a visible alarm lead whose one-time trigger crosses E05/E07 ownership. It adds no room, encounter or source volume, but it does increase mechanism count and cross-placement state.

**How it could fall flat:** if the carriage moves too slowly, the scene becomes an escort chore; if the safe rail edge always wins, Storm Choir never asks for the thrilling step into density; if source warnings, Carousel, Veil and the scan display compete at once, the player will see interface noise instead of a revelation. Later authorized layout and play validation would need to distinguish those failures. For now, the proposal's standard is readable: pressure makes the player move with the lamp, ordinary growth changes the machine before the major, the manual storm earns a quiet view, and that view becomes a route worth returning to.

## Precise integration needed if accepted

- **Hordes and Builds:** replace the open placement note with this named R14→R15/R24-source/R28-bridge example; keep its player-first wording and current Storm rules.
- **Combat Rules:** add only the two scan-milestone facts, the three pre-major bands and the R24 final-stage timing; do not generalize another growth system.
- **Station Room And Module Inventory:** add R15's counted fitting, clear rail/bulkhead geometry and glazed bridge opening; the arrangement-specific R15↔R28 sightline; R28's receiver collar; the 40–80 R15 allocation; and the visible R15→R24 alarm lead/alternate trigger. Preserve every existing threshold, crawl, source closure, record position and rescue boundary.
- **Encounter And Mechanism Placement Inventory:** map the scan across existing E05 pressure and the same E07 loft stage, forbid duplicate triggering, record P14/count cost and keep E05/E07 as separate encounter IDs.
- **Equipment/information pages:** link the existing 7 C / 7 A Storm Choir, one-canister carrying example, current Echoing Arc/Thunderhead limits, full journal pause and live framed-record rule. Do not select the proposed Ricochet or Gravity replacements.
