# Hold The Horde — Receiver Vault Expedition

*A proposed later expedition: turn the vault's crowded approach into a firing line, then discover why an old hospital record belongs beside an alien pressure seal. The route, milestone and pacing below are written design hypotheses.*

## Something behind the hospital's work

The astronaut has a hospital commissioning record with an unexplained punched value copied into it. At the Receiver Vault, that value appears on a strip trapped beneath a human adapter. Reaching it means crossing a hall where an armoured **Shutterback** shelters a moving crowd, a glass-bodied **Siphon** watches the pillars, and two side mouths are beginning to open.

The hoped-for pleasure is recognition earned through danger: first, “I can make this impossible crowd work for my build”; afterward, “that record I brought back meant something I hadn't understood.” Opening the inner iris is the expedition's physical ambition. Bringing home the comparison and one completed clamp is also worthwhile progress.

The example loadout is the current **Ricochet Foundry** base. A Sensor keeps a Projector firing; its impacts feed a Dynamo and Capacitor. A separate Manual Trigger fires a Nozzle to shove eligible bodies. Those six parts use seven carrying units and seven mounted spaces. One oxygen canister brings the load to nine of ten carrying units, leaving one for a find. There is no Barrier. The installed ship configuration must already support this rig.

## Grow on the way there

This example proposes one new **current walking arrangement**, using existing thresholds:

**Dock Mouth → R-3 Approach → Jammed Pressure Approach → Sampling Loop → Receiver Vault Approach** (R01→R11→R17→R20→R35).

Sampling Loop's existing second threshold faces the vault hall's existing entry. This replaces its R25 neighbour only where those exterior approaches are unjoined; no completed join is undone. It adds no doorway and promises no future shift. R35 must also currently meet the R36 vault assembly. The established longer route through Balance Gallery remains a different arrival case below.

R-3's quarantine grille was sealed earlier. It stays shut. The ward doors farther on remain unsealed: a standing Flanker group and two ward bands warn their arrival from R17's actual gallery and doors. The astronaut takes the long lane for fighting, keeping the cutter-opened service passage as a shorter return. Surviving followers can enter Sampling Loop through the walked threshold; that room creates no additional population.

Under the proposed [combat-growth rule](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Combat%20Rules), breaking roughly half of each announced band fills one **Break Mark**. Three marks bank a **Tune**, an ordinary temporary upgrade choice. Here the first Tune can offer **Rebound Disc**. The player takes it in the fully paused journal, or leaves the choice queued. Ordinary shots become physical discs with banked paths. Movement decides which visible hostile becomes the automatic target and whether the resulting line has a useful reflection.

Clearing or separating the followers earns the Sampling Loop's counter-reading lull. Its Siphon and Breath Bank still need their own answers. Earlier completed caps help; the crowd's defeat does not turn off machinery. This is also a place to begin coupling the canister before the next hall. Walking and ordinary fire can continue during transfer; a manual special or occupied station control interrupts it.

## Read the crowd, then choose the risk

From R35's threshold, the player sees both side mouths, two pillars, the Shutterback's shelter angle, the Siphon's radius and the Caller beside a separate far-wall hatch. The hatch sits beside the onward doorway. The two side openings beyond that doorway lead to clamp rooms, not enemy stores.

For this pass, divide the hall's **80–150 bodies into two finite bands of 40–75**, one for each side mouth. The already visible Shutterback, Siphon and Caller count within the first band. Local alert starts the first mouth's warning and commitment; its remaining bodies enter even if Shutterback was defeated early. Each mouth shows its possible mark. The second band is warned shortly afterward, without waiting for kills or upgrade selection. Their overlap is the target; efficient play can thin it.

The heel-clamp click and opening fan make a sheltered front that ordinary fire cannot shoot through. The Siphon's empty flash fixes its next tether line. The player can bait that line into a pillar and cross during retraction. Staying in the comfortable lane, however, lets the two crowds meet behind the shelter.

Now there is a consequential choice. Cut the Caller's alarm lead or reach a source closure to reduce the crest, spending live exposure at the control. Or use the Nozzle to open a firing angle now and accept that the Caller may finish: its separate far hatch then admits its one existing stage alongside the surviving hall crowd. A shove spent arranging the shot is temporarily unavailable as an escape. Closing any feeding aperture leaves the walking doorway and clamp passages open; bodies already through still have to be cleared or separated.

## A transformation while the hall still matters

The proposed vault milestone is **Turn the shelter**. Two visible facts are remembered once per expedition, in either order:

- **Hall engaged:** either warned side-mouth band has committed.
- **Shelter answered:** the astronaut reaches the clear long flank beyond the opened fan's displayed edge, with an unobstructed line into its protected lane; or a shove that breaks its stance, broken clamps or defeat collapses the Shutterback's shelter. An early defeat counts.

The first commitment and fan warning belong to the early gather. The placement target is a first flank opportunity before that band breaks, making **major transformation ready** while the second band and much of the first still matter. Actual distances and timing must support that target. The ordinary route uses pillars, Siphon retraction and the long flank; no upgrade, language interpretation or survivor is required. Taking an unblocked attack is not an answer. There is no invulnerability, replacement Shutterback or compensating release if a powerful player ends the threat early.

For the carried Ricochet base, the compatible example is **Foundry Drop**, a full-store manual master disc and terminal fan. It does not require first choosing Rebound Disc or Fragment Wake. The player can pause immediately to take it, defer the offer, or decline it and keep crossing. Local withdrawal and re-entry cannot pay this milestone again. A new expedition renews these encounter facts only with eligible fresh opposition; permanent work stays completed. Sealing one mouth before commitment sacrifices its band and mark but leaves the other eligible; sealing both before any commitment buys quiet and forgoes this milestone. The seal preview states the actual unpaid marks prevented.

The display shows the two short conditions beside their visible causes. The player should understand the achievement from the move they just made.

## Make the architecture fire back

Independent ordinary impacts have filled the Capacitor during this expedition. If the Projector is too hot, cover that removes its valid targets gives it a cooling break. With full store, readiness and heat headroom, the astronaut moves until the preview shows a stationary pillar face with a clear reflected line into the exposed crowd. A Nozzle shove can move eligible front bodies before the shot; it cannot steer a flying disc or move the pillar. If the reflection is blocked, choose another line or accept the shown terminal.

One manual command launches the master disc. It cuts along its committed line, banks where the geometry allows, then opens a forward fragment fan at its normal terminal. The thrilling image is a lane opening through bodies that had looked like one solid protected mass. The surviving side crowd and, if allowed, the Caller stage make that opening useful: cross it, reach a closure, or advance toward the first clamp before it fills again with existing pursuers.

The burst's ideal ceiling is **48 distinct bodies**, and this two-pillar shot may reach far fewer. Only three bodies can be passed on one straight segment; a further body ends that segment and disc. Dense frontage can produce an early fan rather than ten glorious banks. Hard cover stops fragments, the shelter is not a bank face, and a special creature may survive.

The accepted shot spends the full store. Charging reconnects automatically, but the master cannot recharge itself; ordinary independent impacts must do that. Heat, recovering parts and effects still in flight can delay the next action. The [equipment rules](/Hold%20The%20Flood/Equipment%20Catalogue) own those limits.

## Quiet makes the discovery possible

After the committed crowds are cleared or separated, the Caller stage is prevented or spent and no warned arrivals remain, the astronaut can approach the gauges. R36–R40 are source-free, leaving the iris work in the quiet just won.

Two builder-marked selectors face an empty receiving vessel. The visitor mark `OSH·b` sits beside an inward arrow. Earlier builder run-order evidence can predict the pump-purpose control; earlier visitor transfer pairs independently suggest feeding the receiver. Neither interpretation is necessary. Pump/inward raises the gauge. Purge/outward lowers it and lights the vent; neutral lets the player reverse that mistake. The slower physical route reaches one clamp in the east refuge and another along the west recovery walk, then equalises the same pressure. A completed first clamp remains if the player withdraws. An interrupted clamp does not.

Before equality, a local B plate offers an optional test of the earlier responsive writing. Seating this fitting's own plate in the reply face acknowledges once and defers the current inlet line without moving the pressure controls. A plate from another fitting does nothing. Reclaiming the correct plate restores that same unfinished line; equalisation closes it even if the plate remains seated. The panel has responded to work and an object, but that does not establish who, if anyone, is speaking.

Now frame a live capture of the strip beneath the human adapter. In the paused journal, put it beside the commissioning card: the same punched value was copied as **found**, before the named human profile revision. Compare that revision with the berth's recorded docking trace. The physical layering and linked records support a limited sequence: old seal state, human profile installation, this docking registration. They do not supply a universal date or prove an ancient author. Missing either earlier capture leaves a specific reason for another expedition, not a completed deduction awarded by the journal.

The realization is personal: the hospital's record describes its use of something already there, and the same revision appears in the astronaut's arrival record. The passage beyond now matters for a better reason than a locked door. Equalising and hand-cycling the iris remain separate live actions. This expedition stops at that access and its questions; what the deeper cell contains and what to do about it remain open.

## Arrive differently; leave with something lasting

| Arrival | Meaningful choice in this hall |
|---|---|
| **Ordinary four-part Sensor/Projector and Manual/Barrier rig; no new upgrades** | Two ordinary canisters and the rig use eight carrying units. Use a pillar against Siphon, a faced Barrier against an eligible strike, the long flank and source controls. The milestone is reachable but not an access key. Spend the additional breathing margin on the second clamp, or bank the first and withdraw. |
| **Ricochet base growing on the proposed shorter route** | Rebound Disc changes approach fighting; the vault can offer the first major transformation. Spend scarce air and the Nozzle's escape opportunity on a valuable master-disc line. |
| **Already developed arrival through Balance Gallery** | Keep Foundry Drop already owned or offered by the gallery; this example creates no duplicate. The vault supplies new geometry, a Caller choice and a discovery destination. Fragment Wake, if earned from ordinary growth, also makes terminal fans useful between master shots. |

On the established sealed route through R17→R20→R25→R26→R27→R35, **140–220 bodies have already migrated from R35 and 80–150 remain there**: one conserved 220–370 allocation. Reaching the vault never refills it. Its Caller stage is separate. This proposal does not add a second major effect for a rig that already owns its currently defined one; later upgrade variety remains a content question.

The heavy loadout's suit and ordinary canister contain ten minutes of base breathing, including time spent fighting, capturing, working and coupling; a full canister transfer takes 80 live seconds. That is a constraint, not a certified completion time. The ordinary two-canister loadout carries fourteen base minutes, with two transfers. Extra tether drain, failed work and a slow return spend those margins. A first clamp and useful record justify turning home before the iris opens.

Home resets every temporary upgrade and unused offer. Carried equipment and unspent contents return; breathed gas stays spent and a seated plate remains at the inlet. Living return preserves the arrangement. Death can change unjoined approaches, while the five-room vault assembly stays internally together. Completed clamps, equality, iris work, captures and actual permanent joins keep their owning states. The next expedition brings fresh opposition through eligible sources, with completed seals respected. This route proposal does not establish renewal coverage for every shifted arrangement.

**Strongest failure:** the approach consumes the oxygen and attention needed for the evidence, while overlapping shelter, tether, Caller and disc previews turn spectacle into visual noise. A simpler version cuts the Caller alarm early, faces the two finite side bands with ordinary growth, and places no new vault milestone. It preserves a substantial hall fight and the same iris discovery, but loses the pleasure of a new transformation changing a still-growing crest. Neither version has demonstrated fun, readability, balance or duration.
